ENTERING THE LIMBO
ENTERING THE LIMBO is a large-scale Ensemble in Limbo concert-performance created for Arzenál club in Budapest, performed on 21 May 2026.
The work brought together 10 musicians, 10 dancers and live electronics in a site-specific performance exploring the interweaving of sound, movement and space. For this latest chapter of Ensemble in Limbo, Márk Bartha invited dancer-choreographer Emese Cuhorka as a co-creator, extending the project’s musical logic into the physical and choreographic space.
Set within the industrial environment of Arzenál, the performance moved beyond the format of a frontal concert. Sound sources, bodies, light and audience presence formed a shared, immersive field, where the venue was not merely a backdrop but an active participant in the event.
Musically, Entering the Limbo continued the central concerns of Ensemble in Limbo: collective creation, active listening, acoustic resonance, live electronics, just intonation and slowly unfolding musical processes. Through sustained tones, repetition, silence and sound sources drifting through space, the piece searched for a distinct sonic quality in which acoustic instruments and electronics could melt into one immersive experience.
The dancers became extensions of the same process. Their movement was not treated as an illustration of the music, but as another layer of articulation: a way of tracing time, density, proximity and transformation through the body. Together, the musicians and dancers formed a temporary community inside the space — a shared organism of breath, vibration, movement and attention.
Entering the Limbo explores limbo as a state of suspension and transition: a floating field of perception where performers and audience alike may become participants in the same slow process of transformation. The work continues Ensemble in Limbo’s ongoing research into ritual, mourning, shared memory and the fragile forms of collective presence.
